Phloem cells in plants are arranged longitudinally, forming a continuous tube-like structure for transporting food and nutrients.
Phloem is a complex tissue, one of the two types of vascular tissues found in plants, the other being xylem. It is responsible for the translocation of organic nutrients, particularly sugars produced during photosynthesis, from the leaves to other parts of the plant. The phloem tissue is composed of several types of cells including sieve tube elements, companion cells, phloem fibres, and phloem parenchyma.
The most significant cells in the phloem tissue are the sieve tube elements and companion cells. Sieve tube elements are elongated, tube-like structures that are arranged end-to-end, forming a continuous channel for the transport of nutrients. These cells lack a nucleus and other typical cell organelles, but they are alive and functional. The end walls of the sieve tube elements have sieve plates, which have pores to allow the movement of nutrients.
Companion cells are closely associated with the sieve tube elements. They are smaller in size and have a nucleus. These cells control the activities of the sieve tube elements and help in the loading and unloading of sugars into the sieve tubes.
Phloem fibres provide mechanical support to the tissue, while phloem parenchyma cells are involved in the storage and transport of nutrients. The arrangement of these cells in the phloem tissue facilitates efficient transport of nutrients, ensuring the growth and survival of the plant.
In summary, the phloem cells are arranged in a longitudinal manner, forming a continuous tube-like structure. This arrangement, along with the unique characteristics of the different types of phloem cells, enables the efficient transport of food and nutrients throughout the plant.
