How do Broca's and Wernicke's areas influence language?

Broca's and Wernicke's areas are crucial for language production and comprehension respectively in the human brain.

Broca's area, located in the frontal lobe of the brain, is primarily responsible for speech production. It was named after Pierre Paul Broca, a French physician, who discovered its function in the 19th century when he studied patients with speech difficulties. These patients could understand language perfectly but struggled to speak or write. This condition, known as Broca's aphasia, led to the understanding that this area of the brain controls the motor functions involved in speech production. It coordinates the movements of the muscles in the mouth and throat to produce the sounds that make up our speech.

On the other hand, Wernicke's area, located in the superior temporal gyrus in the dominant cerebral hemisphere, which is the left hemisphere in about 95% of right-handed individuals and 70% of left-handed individuals, is responsible for the comprehension of speech. This area was named after Carl Wernicke, a German neurologist, who in the late 19th century found that damage to this area caused a type of aphasia (Wernicke's aphasia) characterised by fluent but meaningless speech and severe impairment of the ability understand spoken or written language.

The two areas are connected by a bundle of nerve fibres called the arcuate fasciculus. This connection allows for the coordination between speech production and comprehension. For instance, when we want to respond to something we hear, the Wernicke's area first processes and understands the speech, then the message is sent via the arcuate fasciculus to the Broca's area which plans and initiates our verbal response.

Broca's area enables us to physically produce speech, while Wernicke's area allows us to understand the language we hear and read.
