The moon's gravitational pull is the primary force driving the tides. The gravitational attraction between the Earth and the moon is not uniform across the planet. This is because the moon is closer to one side of the Earth than the other, and therefore its gravitational pull is stronger on the side of the Earth that is nearer to it. This causes the water on this side of the Earth to be pulled towards the moon, creating a bulge of water, or a high tide.
On the opposite side of the Earth, the situation is a bit different. Here, the Earth itself is being pulled more strongly towards the moon than the water. This causes the water to be left behind a bit, creating another bulge or high tide on the far side of the Earth. The areas in between these bulges experience low tides.
This is a simplified explanation, and in reality, the situation is a bit more complex. The Earth's rotation, the tilt of the Earth's axis, the depth of the ocean, and the shape of the coastline all play a role in determining the exact timing and height of the tides.
Furthermore, the sun also has an effect on the tides, although its influence is less than that of the moon because it is much further away. When the sun, moon, and Earth are aligned (during a full moon or new moon), the gravitational pull of the sun adds to that of the moon, causing especially high tides known as spring tides. When the sun and moon are at right angles to each other (during the first and third quarter moons), their gravitational pulls partially cancel each other out, resulting in lower high tides known as neap tides.
