Nuclear binding energy is the energy required to disassemble a nucleus of an atom into its constituent protons and neutrons.

These nucleons are held together by the strong nuclear force, one of the four fundamental forces of nature. This force is incredibly strong, but it operates over very short distances. The energy required to overcome this force and disassemble the nucleus into its individual nucleons is what we refer to as the nuclear binding energy.
The concept of nuclear binding energy is crucial in nuclear physics and chemistry, particularly in understanding nuclear reactions such as fission and fusion. In nuclear fission, a heavy nucleus splits into two or more lighter nuclei, releasing a large amount of energy. This is the principle behind nuclear power plants and atomic bombs. On the other hand, nuclear fusion involves the combination of two light nuclei to form a heavier nucleus, also releasing energy. This is the process that powers the sun and other stars.
The nuclear binding energy can also be thought of as the energy equivalent of the mass defect of the nucleus. The mass defect is the difference between the mass of the nucleus and the sum of the masses of its individual nucleons. According to Einstein's famous equation E=mc^2, this mass difference can be converted into energy, which is the nuclear binding energy.
The nuclear binding energy varies for different elements and isotopes. It is usually expressed in units of electron volts (eV) per nucleon. The element with the highest nuclear binding energy per nucleon is iron-56, which is why it is the most stable element and the end product of nuclear fusion in stars. Elements heavier or lighter than iron-56 can release energy through either fusion or fission as they move towards this point of maximum stability.
