In the double-slit experiment, a beam of light is shone through two closely spaced slits onto a screen. The light waves passing through the two slits spread out and overlap, creating an interference pattern on the screen. This pattern consists of alternating bright and dark fringes, which are the result of constructive and destructive interference respectively.
Constructive interference occurs when the peaks of two waves align, resulting in a wave with a larger amplitude. This is seen as a bright fringe on the screen. On the other hand, destructive interference happens when the peak of one wave aligns with the trough of another, cancelling each other out and resulting in a wave with a smaller amplitude or even zero amplitude. This is seen as a dark fringe on the screen.
The position of these fringes can be predicted using the principle of superposition and the wave nature of light. The principle of superposition states that when two or more waves overlap, the resultant wave is the sum of the individual waves. Therefore, where the waves from the two slits meet in phase (peaks align with peaks and troughs with troughs), constructive interference occurs, producing a bright fringe. Where they meet out of phase (peaks align with troughs), destructive interference occurs, producing a dark fringe.
The double-slit experiment is a clear demonstration of the wave nature of light, as particles would not produce an interference pattern. It also provides evidence for the quantum mechanical concept of wave-particle duality, as light and other forms of electromagnetic radiation can exhibit both wave-like and particle-like properties.
