Radiation differs from other thermal transfer methods as it doesn't require a medium to transfer heat energy.
Radiation is a method of heat transfer that is fundamentally different from conduction and convection, the other two primary methods of thermal energy transfer. While conduction and convection require a medium (like a solid, liquid, or gas) to transfer heat, radiation does not. It can transfer heat through the vacuum of space, which is how the Sun's energy reaches Earth.
Radiation involves the emission of electromagnetic waves, particularly infrared waves, which carry energy away from the emitting object. This is a quantum mechanical process, involving the emission of photons, the fundamental particles of light. When these photons strike another object, they can be absorbed, transferring their energy to the object and thereby heating it. This is how you can feel the warmth of the Sun on your skin, even though there's no air between you and the Sun to conduct or convect the heat.
In contrast, conduction involves the transfer of heat energy through a material by the vibration of its particles. This is why metals, whose particles are free to move and vibrate, are good conductors of heat. Convection, on the other hand, involves the bulk movement of a fluid (either a liquid or a gas) carrying heat energy with it. This is why you can feel a warm breeze on a hot day, as the air itself is moving and carrying heat with it.
In summary, radiation is unique among the methods of heat transfer in that it does not require a medium. It involves the emission and absorption of photons, which can travel through the vacuum of space. This is in contrast to conduction and convection, which involve the transfer of heat through the vibration of particles or the movement of fluids, respectively.
