Overtopping devices, on the other hand, are designed to capture and store the water from ocean waves in a reservoir. The water is then released, and as it flows back into the sea, it drives a turbine, generating electricity.

Tidal power stations, on the other hand, harness the energy from the rise and fall of ocean tides. There are two main types of tidal energy technologies: tidal stream generators and tidal barrages. Tidal stream generators are similar to wind turbines, but instead of air, they use the kinetic energy of moving water to turn the turbine. These are typically located in areas with fast-flowing tidal currents. Tidal barrages, however, are essentially dams built across estuaries. When the tide comes in, it fills up the estuary to a higher level than the sea. When the tide goes out, the water in the estuary is released back into the sea, passing through turbines and generating electricity.

Both wave and tidal power stations are forms of renewable energy, as they utilise the endless energy provided by the ocean. However, the technology is still in its early stages and there are challenges to overcome, such as the harsh marine environment and the variability of wave and tidal energy.
