The magnitude of the force is directly proportional to the charge of the particle, the speed at which it's moving, and the strength of the magnetic field. It also depends on the angle between the direction of motion and the direction of the magnetic field. If the particle is moving parallel or anti-parallel to the magnetic field, it experiences no force. However, if it's moving perpendicular to the field, the force is at its maximum.
The direction of the force is given by Fleming's left-hand rule. If you stretch your thumb, forefinger, and middle finger of your left hand such that they are mutually perpendicular, and if the forefinger points in the direction of the magnetic field, the thumb in the direction of motion of the positive charge, then the middle finger will point in the direction of the force.
This force causes the charged particle to move in a circular or helical path. The radius of this path depends on the mass and speed of the particle, and the strength of the magnetic field. The faster the particle or the stronger the field, the smaller the radius. Conversely, the heavier the particle, the larger the radius.
This principle is used in many applications, from the large-scale, such as the Earth's magnetic field deflecting charged particles from the sun, to the small-scale, such as in cathode ray tubes in old televisions. Understanding how magnetic fields influence moving charges is crucial in fields such as electronics, telecommunications, and particle physics.
