How do system software and application software differ?

System software manages and controls computer hardware, while application software performs specific tasks for the user.

System software is a type of computer program that is designed to run a computer's hardware and application programs. It serves as the platform for running application software. The system software is installed on your computer when you install your operating system. You can’t run a computer without system software. Examples of system software include operating systems like Microsoft Windows, Linux, Mac OS, and BIOS. Other examples are device drivers, servers, utilities, and system utilities.

On the other hand, application software, also known as an application or an "app", is software that performs specific tasks for users. These tasks could be anything from word processing, web browsing, and email, to photo editing, music production, and design. Application software is specific to the task it is designed for and can be as simple as a calculator application or as complex as a word processing application. Examples of application software include Microsoft Office Suite, Adobe Photoshop, Google Chrome, and VLC Media Player.

The main difference between system software and application software is their functionality and usability. System software is responsible for managing and controlling the computer hardware, thus providing a platform for the user to interact with the machine. It is necessary for the computer to function and cannot be removed. Application software, however, is optional and is tailored to the user's needs. It is installed according to the tasks the user needs to perform on the computer.

In summary, system software and application software are both essential components of a computer system. However, they perform different roles. System software manages the computer's internal functions, primarily through the operating system and helps to optimise the computer's resources. Application software, on the other hand, is used directly by the user to perform tasks and activities.
