The ribosome then forms peptide bonds between the amino acids, creating a polypeptide chain. This chain will eventually fold into a functional protein.

Ribosomes can be found either floating freely in the cytoplasm or attached to the endoplasmic reticulum (ER). Those attached to the ER synthesise proteins that are either secreted from the cell or inserted into the cell membrane. Free ribosomes, on the other hand, synthesise proteins that stay within the cell.
