In this way, macrophages act as a bridge between the innate immune response, which is non-specific and immediate, and the adaptive immune response, which is specific and takes longer to develop.

Furthermore, macrophages are involved in the process of inflammation, which is a key part of the immune response to infection or injury. They release chemicals known as cytokines, which attract other immune cells to the site of infection or injury, and promote healing once the threat has been neutralised.
