This embryo is the product of the fertilisation process, where the male and female gametes combine to form a zygote, which then develops into an embryo.

The seed also contains a food store that provides nutrients to the young plant in the early stages of its growth. This food store is either in the form of endosperm or cotyledons. The endosperm is a tissue produced inside the seeds of most flowering plants around the time of fertilisation. It provides nutrition to the developing embryo. Cotyledons, on the other hand, are a type of embryonic leaf in seed-bearing plants. In some species, these cotyledons become the embryonic first leaves of a new plant.

Germination occurs when the seed absorbs water, swells and breaks the seed coat. This is followed by the growth of the root, which anchors the seedling and absorbs water and minerals from the soil. The shoot then emerges and grows towards the light. This process is known as photomorphogenesis. The shoot typically contains the stem, leaves and in some cases, flowers. These structures enable the plant to photosynthesise, converting light energy into chemical energy for growth and development.

In essence, seed germination is the first step in a plant's journey from being a dormant seed to a fully grown plant. It is a critical phase in a plant's life cycle as it determines the survival and growth of the plant. Without successful germination, there would be no plant, and hence, no continuation of the species.
