What are the roles of DNA and RNA in protein synthesis?

DNA, or deoxyribonucleic acid, is the molecule that contains the genetic code for all living organisms. It is located in the nucleus of the cell and is responsible for storing and transferring genetic information. The role of DNA in protein synthesis is to provide the instructions or the blueprint for the sequence of amino acids that make up a protein. This process begins with the unwinding of the DNA double helix to expose the nitrogenous bases. An enzyme called DNA polymerase then copies one strand of the DNA in a process known as transcription.

RNA, or ribonucleic acid, plays a crucial role in the process of protein synthesis. There are three types of RNA involved: messenger RNA (mRNA), transfer RNA (tRNA), and ribosomal RNA (rRNA). The mRNA is created during transcription, where it copies the genetic information from the DNA. This mRNA then leaves the nucleus and travels to the ribosomes in the cytoplasm.

At the ribosomes, the process of translation occurs. The mRNA serves as a template for the sequence of amino acids in a protein. The tRNA, which carries specific amino acids, recognises and binds to the corresponding codons (a sequence of three nucleotides) on the mRNA. The rRNA, which is a component of the ribosome, facilitates the binding of the tRNA to the mRNA and catalyses the formation of the peptide bond between the amino acids. This results in the formation of a polypeptide chain, which folds into a specific shape to form a protein.

DNA provides the genetic instructions, while RNA transcribes these instructions into mRNA and translates them into proteins at the ribosomes.
