The structure of tRNA enables its function by allowing it to carry specific amino acids and recognise specific codons on mRNA.
tRNA, or transfer RNA, is a type of RNA molecule that plays a crucial role in protein synthesis. Its structure is key to its function. tRNA molecules are single-stranded, but they fold into a three-dimensional shape that resembles a cloverleaf when viewed in two dimensions. This shape is stabilised by hydrogen bonds between complementary base pairs.
One end of the tRNA molecule, known as the 3' end, carries an amino acid. Each tRNA molecule is specific to one type of amino acid, which it carries to the ribosome during protein synthesis. The other end of the tRNA molecule contains a sequence of three nucleotides, known as an anticodon. This anticodon is complementary to a codon on the mRNA molecule. This means that each tRNA molecule can recognise and bind to a specific codon on the mRNA, ensuring that the correct amino acid is added to the growing polypeptide chain.
The tRNA molecule also has other regions that are important for its function. For example, the D loop and TΨC loop are involved in recognising the correct aminoacyl-tRNA synthetase, the enzyme that attaches the correct amino acid to the tRNA. The variable loop, which varies in length between different tRNAs, may also play a role in recognising the correct aminoacyl-tRNA synthetase.
