The accessory pigments in plants enhance photosynthesis by absorbing light energy in wavelengths that chlorophyll cannot.
Accessory pigments are secondary pigments found in plants that assist in the process of photosynthesis. They are called 'accessory' because they work alongside the primary pigment, chlorophyll, which is responsible for capturing light energy and converting it into chemical energy during photosynthesis. The accessory pigments include carotenoids, anthocyanins, and phycobilins, each of which absorbs light energy in different wavelengths that chlorophyll cannot.
Chlorophyll absorbs light most efficiently in the blue and red regions of the light spectrum, but less so in the green region. This is why most plants appear green, as they reflect green light. However, light energy is also available in other parts of the spectrum, such as the yellow, orange, and violet regions. This is where the accessory pigments come into play. For example, carotenoids absorb light in the blue and green regions of the spectrum, while anthocyanins absorb green, blue, and ultraviolet light.
By absorbing light energy in these additional wavelengths, the accessory pigments increase the range of light energy that a plant can use for photosynthesis. This light energy is then transferred to the chlorophyll for use in the photosynthetic process. In this way, the accessory pigments enhance the efficiency of photosynthesis, enabling the plant to produce more glucose and other energy-rich compounds.
In addition to their role in photosynthesis, accessory pigments also have other functions in plants. For instance, they can protect the plant from damage by excess light energy, and they contribute to the colours of flowers and fruits, which can attract pollinators and seed dispersers. However, their primary role is to assist in photosynthesis by capturing a wider range of light energy than chlorophyll alone can.
