Vesicles are formed in a cell through a process called vesicle budding from the membrane of an organelle.
Vesicle formation is a crucial part of intracellular transport. It involves the movement of proteins and lipids from one part of the cell to another. This process is initiated when a portion of the membrane of an organelle such as the endoplasmic reticulum (ER) or the Golgi apparatus, starts to bulge outwards. This bulging is driven by the accumulation of proteins or lipids within that specific region of the membrane.
The bulging membrane then starts to form a spherical shape, enclosing the proteins or lipids within it. This is facilitated by a group of proteins called coat proteins. These proteins assemble on the cytosolic side of the membrane and help to curve it into a vesicle. The coat proteins also select the cargo - the proteins or lipids that need to be transported.
Once the vesicle is fully formed, it pinches off from the membrane, a process called fission. This is aided by another set of proteins called scission proteins. The vesicle, now separate from the organelle, can move to its target location within the cell. The coat proteins are then recycled back to the cytosol.
The vesicle fuses with the target membrane (for example, the plasma membrane if the vesicle is exporting substances out of the cell, or the membrane of another organelle if the vesicle is transporting substances within the cell). The fusion is facilitated by proteins called SNAREs. The vesicle releases its cargo into the target location and the vesicle membrane becomes part of the target membrane.
