Stomata are tiny openings or pores, primarily found on the underside of plant leaves. They play a significant role in photosynthesis, a process by which green plants and some other organisms use sunlight to synthesise foods with the help of carbon dioxide and water. Stomata control the movement of gases in and out of a plant. More specifically, they allow the uptake of carbon dioxide from the atmosphere, which is then used in the photosynthesis process to produce glucose, the plant's primary source of energy.
The stomata are surrounded by two specialised parenchyma cells, known as guard cells, which control the opening and closing of the stomata. When the guard cells are filled with water, they swell, causing the stomata to open. Conversely, when the guard cells lose water, they shrink, leading to the closure of the stomata. This mechanism is crucial in regulating the amount of carbon dioxide that enters the plant, as well as preventing excessive water loss through transpiration.
In addition to carbon dioxide, stomata also allow the release of oxygen, a by-product of photosynthesis, into the atmosphere. This is another critical aspect of their role in photosynthesis, as the oxygen produced is essential for the survival of most organisms on Earth.
Furthermore, stomata also play a role in the plant's internal water balance. By opening and closing, they regulate the plant's water loss through transpiration. This is particularly important in hot or dry conditions, where excessive water loss could lead to the plant wilting or even dying.
