They form the core of cilia and flagella, hair-like structures that protrude from the cell surface and enable movement. The microtubules in these structures are arranged in a '9+2' pattern, with nine doublets of microtubules surrounding a central pair. This arrangement allows the cilia and flagella to bend and move in a coordinated manner.
