Thermal conductivity and thermal resistance are inversely related; high thermal conductivity means low thermal resistance and vice versa.
Thermal conductivity is a measure of a material's ability to conduct heat. It is denoted by the symbol \( k \) and is measured in watts per metre per degree Celsius (W/m·°C). Materials with high thermal conductivity, like metals, can transfer heat quickly and efficiently. For example, copper has a high thermal conductivity, which is why it is often used in cooking utensils and heat sinks.
On the other hand, thermal resistance is a measure of a material's ability to resist the flow of heat. It is denoted by the symbol \( R \) and is measured in degrees Celsius per watt (°C/W). Materials with high thermal resistance, like foam or fibreglass, are good insulators because they slow down the transfer of heat. This is why such materials are used in building insulation to keep homes warm in winter and cool in summer.
The relationship between thermal conductivity and thermal resistance can be understood through the formula:
\[ R = \frac{L}{k} \]
where \( R \) is the thermal resistance, \( L \) is the thickness of the material, and \( k \) is the thermal conductivity. From this formula, you can see that if the thermal conductivity \( k \) is high, the thermal resistance \( R \) will be low, assuming the thickness \( L \) remains constant. Conversely, if the thermal conductivity \( k \) is low, the thermal resistance \( R \) will be high.
