What is the Kuiper Belt?

The Kuiper Belt is a region of the Solar System beyond Neptune, filled with icy bodies and dwarf planets.

The Kuiper Belt extends from about 30 to 55 astronomical units (AU) from the Sun. One AU is the average distance between the Earth and the Sun, roughly 150 million kilometres. This distant region is similar to the asteroid belt but is far larger and more massive. It is home to a variety of objects, including comets, asteroids, and dwarf planets like Pluto, Haumea, and Makemake.

The objects in the Kuiper Belt are composed mainly of frozen volatiles, such as methane, ammonia, and water. Unlike the rocky asteroids found in the asteroid belt between Mars and Jupiter, Kuiper Belt objects (KBOs) are more similar to comets, with their icy compositions.
