What is the difference between AC and DC generators?

AC generators produce alternating current, while DC generators produce direct current.

AC (Alternating Current) generators, also known as alternators, generate electricity where the current changes direction periodically. This is achieved by rotating a coil within a magnetic field, which induces an alternating voltage. The key feature of AC is that it can easily be transformed to different voltages using transformers, making it highly efficient for transmitting electricity over long distances. DC (Direct Current) generators, on the other hand, produce electricity where the current flows in a single direction. In a DC generator, a commutator is used to convert the alternating voltage generated in the coil into a direct voltage. One of the main differences between AC and DC generators is their construction. AC generators have slip rings that allow the coil to rotate freely while maintaining electrical contact. In contrast, DC generators use a split-ring commutator to reverse the connection of the coil to the external circuit every half turn, ensuring that the output current flows in one direction.
