Insulation reduces energy transfer by limiting heat flow between objects or environments with different temperatures.
In a system, energy transfer often occurs through heat, which can move via conduction, convection, or radiation. Insulation works by creating a barrier that slows down this transfer. For example, in a house, insulation in the walls, roof, and floors helps to keep the heat inside during winter and outside during summer. This is because the materials used for insulation, such as fibreglass or foam, have low thermal conductivity, meaning they do not easily allow heat to pass through them.
Conduction is the transfer of heat through a material. In a well-insulated system, the materials used have tightly packed particles that do not easily pass on kinetic energy to neighbouring particles. This means that heat energy is not easily transferred from the warm side of the insulation to the cooler side. For instance, a thermos flask uses a vacuum layer between two walls to prevent heat transfer by conduction.
Convection is the transfer of heat through fluids (liquids or gases) by the movement of the fluid itself. Insulation can also reduce heat transfer by convection. For example, double-glazed windows have a layer of air or inert gas between the two panes of glass. This trapped layer of gas reduces the movement of air, thereby reducing heat loss through convection.
Radiation is the transfer of energy by electromagnetic waves. Insulating materials often have reflective surfaces that bounce radiant heat back towards its source, reducing heat loss. For example, shiny foil insulation in lofts reflects radiant heat back into the house, keeping it warmer.
By reducing energy transfer, insulation makes systems more energy-efficient, which can save money on energy bills and reduce environmental impact. This is why insulation is a key consideration in building design and energy conservation efforts.
