Lenin, the leader of the Bolshevik Revolution, focused on establishing a socialist state based on Marxist principles. He believed in collective leadership and often sought the input of his colleagues in the Politburo. Lenin's policies, such as the New Economic Policy (NEP), were designed to stabilise the economy by allowing some private enterprise while maintaining state control over major industries. Although Lenin did use force to suppress opposition, his primary goal was to create a classless society through gradual reforms and education.

In contrast, Stalin's leadership style was characterised by extreme centralisation of power and ruthless tactics. After Lenin's death in 1924, Stalin manoeuvred his way to become the undisputed leader of the Soviet Union. He sidelined and eliminated his rivals through political cunning and purges. Stalin's policies, such as the Five-Year Plans and collectivisation, aimed at rapid industrialisation and agricultural consolidation, were implemented with little regard for human cost. Millions of people suffered from famine, forced labour, and executions during his rule.

Stalin also established a cult of personality, portraying himself as the infallible leader of the Soviet Union. Propaganda was used extensively to glorify his achievements and suppress dissent. The Great Purge of the 1930s saw the execution and imprisonment of millions, including party members, military leaders, and ordinary citizens, who were accused of being "enemies of the state."
