What is the difference between a natural hazard and a disaster?

A natural hazard is a potential threat from natural events, while a disaster is the actual impact causing damage.

Natural hazards are events or phenomena that have the potential to cause harm to humans, property, or the environment. Examples include earthquakes, hurricanes, floods, and volcanic eruptions. These hazards are part of the Earth's natural processes and can occur without any human influence. On the other hand, a disaster happens when a natural hazard actually impacts an area, causing significant damage, destruction, and human suffering. For instance, an earthquake in a remote, uninhabited area might be a natural hazard, but it becomes a disaster if it strikes a densely populated city, leading to collapsed buildings, injuries, and fatalities. The key difference lies in the effect: a hazard is a potential threat, while a disaster is the realisation of that threat with tangible negative outcomes.

The severity of a disaster often depends on several factors, including the magnitude of the natural event, the vulnerability of the affected population, and the preparedness and response measures in place. For example, a well-prepared community with strong buildings and effective emergency plans might experience less severe consequences from a hurricane compared to a less prepared community.
