The town of Barnard Castle is situated in the middle course, where the river's energy is used for both erosion and transportation of sediment.

In the lower course, the River Tees flows through a much wider and flatter valley. The river's velocity decreases, and deposition becomes the dominant process. This section is characterised by large meanders, levees, and a broad floodplain. The Tees Estuary, near Middlesbrough, is an important industrial area, with significant human modifications such as dredging and the construction of flood defences to manage the risk of flooding.
