A case study of a UK coastline is the Holderness Coast, known for its rapid erosion and coastal management.
The Holderness Coast is located on the east coast of England, stretching from Flamborough Head in the north to Spurn Point in the south. This coastline is one of the fastest eroding in Europe, with an average annual erosion rate of about 1.8 metres. The primary reason for this rapid erosion is the geology of the area; the cliffs are made of soft boulder clay, which is easily worn away by the sea.
Several factors contribute to the erosion at Holderness. The powerful waves from the North Sea attack the base of the cliffs, causing them to collapse. Longshore drift also plays a significant role, transporting eroded material southwards and leaving the cliffs unprotected. Human activities, such as the construction of groynes and sea walls, have had mixed effects. While these structures protect certain areas, they can exacerbate erosion further down the coast by interrupting the natural sediment flow.
Coastal management strategies have been implemented to address these issues. In places like Mappleton, rock groynes and a rock revetment have been constructed to protect the village and its main road. These defences have been successful in reducing erosion locally, but they have led to increased erosion rates further south. At Withernsea, a combination of sea walls, groynes, and rock armour has been used to protect the town and its infrastructure.
The Holderness Coast is a prime example of the challenges faced in managing coastal erosion. It highlights the need for sustainable and well-planned coastal management strategies that consider the broader impacts on the coastline. This case study is essential for understanding the dynamic nature of coastal environments and the importance of balancing human needs with natural processes.
