Alkenes are named using IUPAC rules by identifying the longest carbon chain, the position of the double bond, and any substituents.
In more detail, the first step in naming alkenes using the International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry (IUPAC) rules is to identify the longest continuous chain of carbon atoms that contains the double bond. This chain is known as the parent chain. The parent chain is named based on the number of carbon atoms it contains, using the same system as for alkanes (meth- for one carbon, eth- for two, prop- for three, and so on), but with the ending -ene to indicate the presence of a double bond.
Next, you need to identify the position of the double bond within the parent chain. The carbon atoms in the chain are numbered starting from the end closest to the double bond. The position of the double bond is indicated by the lowest numbered carbon atom involved in the double bond. For example, if the double bond is between the second and third carbon atoms in the chain, the compound is named as a '2-ene'.
If there are any substituents (groups of atoms attached to the parent chain), these are also included in the name. They are prefixed to the name of the parent chain, along with a number to indicate their position on the chain. The substituents are listed in alphabetical order if there is more than one.
For example, a molecule with a three-carbon chain with a double bond between the first and second carbons, and a methyl group on the second carbon, would be named 2-methylprop-1-ene. Remember, the double bond takes precedence over substituents when numbering the chain.
In cases where there is more than one double bond, the positions of all the double bonds are indicated and the suffix is changed to reflect the number of double bonds (e.g., -diene for two double bonds, -triene for three, etc.).
