The main parts of the brain are the cerebrum, cerebellum, and brainstem.
The cerebrum is the largest part of the brain and is divided into two hemispheres. Each hemisphere is further divided into four main lobes: the frontal lobe, parietal lobe, occipital lobe, and temporal lobe. The cerebrum is responsible for higher brain functions such as thinking, learning, and consciousness. It controls voluntary actions and processes sensory information from the body. The outer layer of the cerebrum, known as the cerebral cortex, is highly folded and is where most information processing occurs.
The cerebellum, located at the back of the brain, is responsible for coordinating voluntary movements, balance, and muscle coordination. It also plays a role in motor learning, which is the process of improving the smoothness and accuracy of movements. The cerebellum receives information from the sensory systems and the spinal cord and uses this information to regulate motor movements.
The brainstem connects the cerebrum and cerebellum to the spinal cord. It controls many basic functions necessary for survival, such as heart rate, breathing, and blood pressure. The brainstem is also responsible for several reflexes and helps relay information between the brain and the rest of the body. It is divided into three parts: the midbrain, pons, and medulla oblongata.
In addition to these main parts, the brain also contains several other important structures, including the thalamus, hypothalamus, and limbic system. The thalamus acts as a relay station for sensory information, while the hypothalamus regulates body temperature, hunger, thirst, and other homeostatic systems. The limbic system, which includes structures like the hippocampus and amygdala, is involved in emotion, memory, and behaviour.
