For example, if you touch something hot, sensory receptors in your skin (part of the PNS) send a signal to your brain (part of the CNS). Your brain processes this information and sends a signal back to your hand (via the PNS) to pull away.

In contrast, the CNS is protected by the skull and spinal column, while the PNS is more exposed and therefore more prone to injury and damage. The cells of the CNS, known as neurons, are also structurally different from those in the PNS.
