The body regulates temperature through a process called thermoregulation, primarily controlled by the hypothalamus in the brain.
Thermoregulation is a vital function of the human body that maintains a stable internal temperature regardless of the external environment. The hypothalamus, a small region in the brain, acts as the body's thermostat. It receives signals from nerve endings throughout the body that provide information about the body's temperature. If the body's temperature deviates from the ideal 37°C, the hypothalamus initiates responses to bring it back to normal.
When the body is too hot, the hypothalamus triggers processes to cool the body down. This includes sweating, where sweat glands produce sweat that evaporates from the skin, cooling it down. The hypothalamus also signals blood vessels in the skin to dilate, a process known as vasodilation. This allows more blood to flow near the skin's surface, where it can be cooled by the air.
Conversely, when the body is too cold, the hypothalamus initiates responses to warm it up. This includes shivering, where muscles rapidly contract and relax to generate heat. The hypothalamus also signals blood vessels in the skin to constrict, a process known as vasoconstriction. This reduces blood flow near the skin's surface, reducing heat loss. Additionally, the hypothalamus can stimulate the thyroid gland to increase metabolic activity, generating more heat.
The body also uses behavioural responses to regulate temperature. For example, in hot conditions, we might seek shade or remove layers of clothing. In cold conditions, we might put on more clothes or seek a warm environment. These behavioural responses, combined with the physiological responses controlled by the hypothalamus, help to maintain a stable body temperature, essential for the body's cells to function effectively.
