Structural adaptations refer to the physical characteristics of the plant that help it survive. For example, many desert plants have thick, waxy cuticles to reduce water loss through transpiration. Some plants, like cacti, have modified their leaves into spines to reduce surface area and thus water loss. They also have extensive root systems to absorb as much water as possible when it does rain.

Physiological adaptations are changes in the plant's metabolic processes that help it survive. Many desert plants are able to store water in their tissues, allowing them to survive long periods of drought. Some plants also have the ability to carry out photosynthesis at night when temperatures are cooler, reducing water loss. This process is known as Crassulacean Acid Metabolism (CAM).

Behavioural adaptations refer to the ways in which plants respond to their environment to increase their chances of survival. For example, some desert plants will only germinate, flower, and seed after a rainfall, ensuring that their seeds have the best chance of survival. Others may change their orientation to the sun throughout the day to minimise water loss.

In summary, plants in arid environments have developed a range of adaptations to survive.
