Kohlberg's cognitive developmental theory of gender development suggests that children develop their gender identity through a series of stages.
According to Kohlberg, children's gender development is influenced by their cognitive development, which progresses through three stages: gender identity, gender stability, and gender constancy. In the first stage, children develop a basic understanding of gender and can identify themselves and others as male or female. In the second stage, children understand that gender is stable over time, meaning that people do not change their gender as they grow older. In the third stage, children understand that gender is constant across situations and that it is an inherent characteristic that cannot be changed. This idea of cognitive progression through stages is similarly explored in Piaget's stages of cognitive development
.
Kohlberg's theory also suggests that children's gender development is influenced by their social interactions and experiences. Children learn about gender through reinforcement, observation, and modelling. They learn what behaviours are appropriate for their gender and what behaviours are not. They also learn about gender stereotypes and gender roles, which are cultural expectations for how males and females should behave. These societal influences can be further understood by studying the origins of stereotypes
and how these evolve into prejudice and discrimination
.
Critics of Kohlberg's theory argue that it focuses too much on cognitive development and does not take into account the role of social and cultural factors in gender development. They also argue that the theory does not account for individual differences in gender development, such as variations in temperament and personality. Despite these criticisms, Kohlberg's theory remains an influential framework for understanding gender development.
