The Transtheoretical Model is a framework for understanding behaviour change in health promotion.
The Transtheoretical Model (TTM) was developed by Prochaska and DiClemente in the 1980s. It is a model that aims to explain the process of behaviour change in health promotion. The TTM suggests that behaviour change is a process that occurs over time and involves different stages. The model proposes five stages of change: precontemplation, contemplation, preparation, action, and maintenance.
In the precontemplation stage, individuals are not yet considering behaviour change. In the contemplation stage, individuals are considering behaviour change but have not yet taken any action. In the preparation stage, individuals are preparing to take action. In the action stage, individuals have started to make changes to their behaviour. In the maintenance stage, individuals have successfully maintained their behaviour change over time.
The TTM also suggests that there are different processes of change that are important at different stages of behaviour change. These processes of change include cognitive processes (e.g. increasing knowledge, awareness, and understanding), behavioural processes (e.g. substituting alternatives, enlisting social support), and emotional processes (e.g. increasing feelings of self-efficacy and confidence).
The TTM has been widely used in health promotion interventions, including smoking cessation, weight loss, and physical activity promotion. The model has been criticised for being too simplistic and not accounting for the complex social and environmental factors that influence behaviour change. However, the TTM remains a useful framework for understanding behaviour change in health promotion.
