To represent data using a dot plot, first create a number line with the range of the data.
Next, place a dot above the number line for each data point. If there are multiple data points with the same value, stack the dots vertically.
For example, let's say we have the following data set: 2, 3, 4, 4, 5, 6, 6, 6, 7, 8.
We would create a number line from 2 to 8, with tick marks for each integer value. Then, we would place a dot above the number line for each data point, stacking dots vertically for repeated values.
The resulting dot plot would look like this:
2 |
3 |
4 | ● ●
5 | ●
6 | ● ● ●
7 | ●
8 |
Dot plots are useful for quickly visualizing the distribution of a data set, especially when the data set is small. They can also be used to identify outliers and gaps in the data.
