NAT (Network Address Translation) works by modifying the IP address information in packets while they are in transit.
Network Address Translation, or NAT, is a method used in networking to remap one IP address space into another by modifying the network address information in the IP header of packets while they are in transit across a traffic routing device. This is a crucial function performed by routers, allowing multiple devices to share a single public IP address.
The process begins when a device from inside the network sends a packet of data over the internet. The source IP address of this packet is the private IP address of the device. When the packet reaches the router, NAT takes place. The router, acting as the NAT device, changes the source IP address in the packet from the private IP address to the public IP address of the router. The router then sends the packet onto the internet.
When a server on the internet responds to the packet, it sends the response back to the source IP address that it sees, which is the public IP address of the router. When the response packet reaches the router, the router performs NAT again, but this time in reverse. It changes the destination IP address in the packet from the public IP address of the router to the private IP address of the device. The router then sends the packet onto the device inside the network.
NAT is essential for conserving the limited number of IPv4 addresses available. Without NAT, every device that connects to the internet would need a unique public IP address. With NAT, thousands of devices can share a single public IP address, each using a unique private IP address inside the network.
In addition to conserving IP addresses, NAT also enhances security. Since the devices inside the network use private IP addresses, they are not directly accessible from the internet. This makes it harder for attackers to target specific devices inside the network.
