Natural polymers include proteins, DNA and cellulose, while synthetic polymers include nylon, PVC and polystyrene.
Natural polymers are those that occur naturally in living organisms. Proteins are one example of a natural polymer, consisting of long chains of amino acids. DNA is another example, consisting of long chains of nucleotides that encode genetic information. Cellulose is a natural polymer found in plant cell walls, providing structural support.
Synthetic polymers, on the other hand, are man-made and do not occur naturally. Nylon is a synthetic polymer commonly used in clothing and textiles, as well as in the manufacturing of toothbrush bristles and fishing line. PVC, or polyvinyl chloride, is a synthetic polymer used in a variety of applications including pipes, flooring and electrical cable insulation. Polystyrene is another synthetic polymer used in the production of disposable cups, packaging materials and insulation.
While both natural and synthetic polymers have their uses, there are concerns about the environmental impact of synthetic polymers. Many synthetic polymers are not biodegradable and can persist in the environment for hundreds of years, contributing to pollution and harming wildlife. As such, there is growing interest in developing more sustainable alternatives to synthetic polymers.
