RNA polymerase is an enzyme that catalyses the synthesis of RNA during transcription.
During transcription, DNA is used as a template to produce RNA molecules. RNA polymerase is responsible for catalysing the formation of phosphodiester bonds between ribonucleotides to form the RNA molecule. The enzyme binds to the promoter region of the DNA and unwinds the double helix to expose the template strand. It then moves along the template strand, adding complementary ribonucleotides to the growing RNA chain in a 5' to 3' direction.
RNA polymerase also plays a role in proofreading and editing the RNA molecule. It can detect and correct errors in the sequence as it is being synthesized. This ensures that the final RNA molecule is an accurate copy of the DNA template.
There are different types of RNA polymerase that are responsible for transcribing different types of RNA molecules. RNA polymerase I transcribes ribosomal RNA (rRNA), RNA polymerase II transcribes messenger RNA (mRNA), and RNA polymerase III transcribes transfer RNA (tRNA) and small nuclear RNA (snRNA).
